Excessive Licking In Dogs

Excessive Licking In Dogs

Do you know licking, despite being a normal behaviour in dogs, can  become one of many bad dog habits.  Article explains why dogs lick, and show you what you can do to stop dog licking.

Canine Licking Is A Natural Behavior For Dogs

Licking is a way for dogs to communicate with each other, and with you.  In the wild, dogs will lick the pack leader when he returns after an absence.  This is a greeting ritual that reinforces the pack social order.  Your dog will probably engage in this same greeting ritual when you get up in the morning or return home from work in the evening.  You should let your dog lick your hands so he can reassure himself that nothing in his world has changed.

Canine licking is also a way for your pup to express his affection for you.  This is how he tells you that he's happy to see you, he loves you, and he wants to be with you.  So allow your dog this normal outlet for his affection, but don't let him overdo it, or it can become one of many bad dog habits.

A less desirable reason for excessive licking in dogs is that your dog is anxious or stressed about something.  Licking himself or you can become an obsessive behavior.  Licking himself too much can lead to hair loss and bald spots.  If he licks you too much, a slobbering dog can get old pretty fast.  You'll need to do some detective work to figure out why he's anxious.

Your dog could also be licking himself simply because he's itchy due to allergies or dry skin.  If he's licking his feet all the time, the pads on his paws may be irritated, especially in the winter months, due to snow, ice, and road salt.

Skin allergies or fleas also cause intense itching, which leads to excessive canine licking.  An older dog may be in pain from arthritis.  It's always a good idea to take your dog in for a vet check if he seems to be spending licking himself too much.

It's always possible that you've accidentally trained your dog to lick you too much by giving him attention every time he licks you.  Your attention is very important to your dog, and he'll do whatever it takes to get it.

How To Stop Dog Licking

If you've ruled out medical or emotional issues, you can quickly stop excessive licking in dogs.  Allow your dog to engage in his greeting rituals, but if he overdoes the licking, say "no licking" very firmly and walk away from him.  Don't talk to him or even look in his direction for a minute or two.  Don't give him any attention at all.

Your slobbering dog will probably probably be very persistent, but you just need to be more persistent.  Don't give up, and he'll eventually get the idea.

Need more dog training tips?  A good dog behavior course that includes a consultation with an experienced dog trainer, and that has a forum where you can get advice from other dog owners should be your next step.

What are you waiting for?  Take the next step now to stop excessive dog licking.

Learn How To Train Your Dog

Dogs are one of the most popular pets, but that does not mean they are perfect. Like any young animal, puppies can be destructive and mischievous without intending to misbehave. Read on for training tips that apply to all dogs.

You will want to use your pet's name to get his or her attention. Use your dog's name when calling to go for a walk, for meal times, and for play. This will teach your dog to pay attention when you say their name. Never punish a dog for coming to you when you call them.

Make sure your dog stays calm as you enter a space that he is in. Play time needs to be a distinctive time you initiate. Don't acknowledge your dog when you enter the room. By doing this, you will be able to create a controlled environment in which you determine when and how play time begins.

Listening to your dog is one of the most important steps of training your dog. If your dog is uncomfortable or scared, then you aren't going to get the result that you are looking for. Respect their needs and the process will go a lot smoother.

Properly trained dogs can be taught to regard their crate as a place of safety. When possible always keep the crate in a central location so that the dog learns to understand that it is there and available all the time. He will begin to seek it out when he is tired and even when he is scared and seeking comfort.

It is important to understand that training your dog will require a lot of patience and repetition. It often takes a dog between 25 and 50 repetitions before they are able to learn a new command. Getting frustrated will only delay your results and may hurt your relationship with your pet.

If you use treats for positive reinforcement when training your dog, be sure that you use them sparingly. If the dog receives a treat every time it follows one of your commands, it will learn that treats and obedience go together, not you and obedience. If you stop giving treats at that point, the dog will stop obeying.

When your dog does not do what you want, tell him "No!" then redirect him. Be patient and calm. Your dog wants to please you, but sometimes dogs just don't understand what is expected of them. Never hit or yell at your dog. If you yell and hit, your dog will just think you are out of control. You want your dog to trust you and respect you as the pack leader, so stay calm and consistent.

To keep your dog from barking, you need to stop rewarding this behavior by giving him what he wants. This means paying attention to your dog, letting him inside the house or comforting him. Your dog will associate your behavior with the barking and will think that you want him to bark.

Stay as consistent as possible during your training regimen. If there are several trainers, ensure that they are all being consistent with rewards and commands. Your pet will have a better time at learning once it knows what response to expect from his behavior.

If you want to train your dog, you should wait until it is at least six weeks old. A younger dog will not understand what you are expecting, and not be able to control itself enough to obey your commands. The first weeks of your puppy's life should be about creating a bond with you.

Not showering your dog with enough positive reinforcement when he does good, will reduce the power you have over him in training. Since dogs love attention, giving them plenty of it, provides him with incentive to listen to you. If all he ever hears from you is what not to do, he is not getting any encouragement, only discouragement, so be sure to reward him with praise often.

Socializing your dog early in life is every bit as important as obedience training. It is essential that your dog understands how to conduct himself when he is around other animals and people outside the family. This will help reduce any sporadic behavior within new environments, too.

One tip to keep in mind when training your dog is that you will want to keep the leash with little to no slack in it. This is important so that your dog does not pull against the leash and try to run uncontrollably when walking it. It is important to ensure that your dog knows to stay by your side.

The best way to potty train a new puppy is to pay attention! Keep your puppy where you can see him always. If you notice him sniffing around or starting to circle, quickly pick him up and take him outside. These are signs that he is ready to go potty.

Don't punish good behavior. Many dog owners make a big mistake during training for recall by having the dog come for reprimanding. This will only teach your dog that responding to his name is a negative event, and will discourage such behavior in the future. Make sure your punishments never incorporate desirable commands.

When training your dog, avoid overlong training sessions by training your dog in several smaller sessions spaced throughout the day. By scattering your training at different times throughout the day your dog will learn to listen to you whenever and wherever you are.

Try using a crate to assist you in housebreaking your dog. Crate training will work if you let your dog go out on a regular basis and maintain a schedule that stays consistent. If you're patient you will find a dog who has been crate trained will make less messes inside.

Keeping your house clean and owning a dog is possible. Some dogs are destructive and can ruin the look of a home's interior and exterior. With a little training, though, those same dogs can be trusted to not wreck the house. Apply these dog training tips to have a dog and a presentable home.

How One Can Decrease Extreme Whining In Your Doggie

How One Can Decrease Extreme Whining In Your Doggie Canines discover to express themselves via a restricted set of vocal tools. For instance, they can bark, and will do so to alert you to something, or draw your attention; they can growl to warn others in close proximity to remain away; they can howl to communicate with other dogs; or they can whine. Whining is really a learned habit that takes type although a canine is still a puppy in his mother's care. When he does it, his mother tends to him. As a outcome, he quickly learns that whining outcomes in his mother's attention.

When puppies are adopted into new houses (usually, at eight weeks), they do not leave this lesson behind. They remember it. The only thing left to discover is regardless of whether it works with his owners as well as it did with his mother. This is really a essential stage. It's at this point that the behavior could be curbed easily upfront, or allowed to develop into a hard-to-break habit. Many owners allow the latter to happen.

This write-up will address the problem of excessive whining in dogs. As with curbing most behavioral problems, the first step is understanding why it happens within the first place.

Motivated By Anxiety Or Excitement

A lot of canines whine because they are excited or anxious. For example, your pet might chase a rodent into a bush, and be unable to follow. He knows the rodent is there, which excites him. Unable to complete something about it, he might begin to whine.

Or, think about a dog that suffers from a fear of thunder. During a thunderstorm, he may be unable to hide, and start whining because of anxiety. In this case, discouraging the habit will usually involve desensitization training that focuses on the underlying concern.

A Call For Attention

Canines that obtain their owners' attention whenever they whine develop an expectation that the behavior will have the exact same outcome down the road. This expectation gains momentum over time. The much more owners respond to their pets' whining, the much more ingrained the habit becomes.

This extends beyond petting your dog. Based on how you respond to his whine, he might come to expect certain actions. For instance, suppose you throw a ball to him every time he whines. He will discover this behavior is the most reliable technique for obtaining you to toss the ball to him.

Looking for attention or a specific response is one of the most typical reasons canines whine. We'll address how you can discourage it in a second.

When Your Pet Is In Pain

Occasionally, a dog will whine when he is coping with pain. Canines which have recently undergone surgery will frequently do this while they recover. Here, the habit is not done to attract attention. Dogs do it to soothe themselves although they're physically uncomfortable. Owners ought to steer clear of reprimanding them when discomfort will be the trigger since the behavior is instinctive, and carried out as a reflex.

How to Discourage Excessive Whining

Recall from earlier that probably the most typical reason for canine whining would be to seek attention. Also, recall that newly-adopted puppies have already learned the habit by the time they arrive in their new homes. Owners have an chance to modify the behavior before it becomes deeply ingrained in their pets' minds.

Some breeders and trainers recommend ignoring a puppy when he begins to whine. But this method communicates to the pup that he's unimportant to his new owner. He may thus start to feel isolated. A much more efficient approach is to make particular your puppy is fine when he starts whining. If he's not, correct whatever issue exists. If he is merely whining for attention, leave him after ensuring he's okay. This sends a clear message to him that you care about him, but his whining won't lead to your lasting attention.

Older canines that whine could be encouraged to break the habit through a process of behavior modification training. When your dog begins to whine, use a distinct noise that signals to him that you simply are withdrawing your attention. When he stops, supply a treat and offer him praise. This may teach him that good things come when he stops whining.

Stopping Puppies From Digging

Stopping Puppies From Digging

If you want to stop puppies from digging, you have to know the purpose why dogs dig on the ground. Dogs dig because they want to look for a place where they can hide food or morsels of it from other predators. These canines would seem to be professional gravediggers, amusing guests but not you. Here are easy steps to make them stop this activity, even if you know that by nature dogs dig:

Limit access to scrap foods: By giving them enough food, there will be nothing left for them to stash away. This could prevent and stop puppies from digging and your mown grass will be free from blank spots. They will try to bury bones and other leftovers to be sure that other animals may not be able to get hold of them.

Limit digging area: Since it is their nature to dig and stash, provide them with an area where they can be free to do this activity all day long as they please. Look at the possibility of giving them a portion of the garden which is shaded so she can do whatever she wants and not burn under the sun. Just as long as you give him an idea of the exact place where this activity can be done, it will not be a hard thing for you anymore.

This limitation can stop puppies from digging in places that are off limits for holes. Make sure that you lead him to spot and give a fast reprimand when this is not followed.

Chili ploy: Dogs hate the smell of any type of Chili. It is also advisable to put ground pepper of the red kind, chili powder, or other aversive substances, mix it with water and sprinkle it over places that you want them to avoid. These substances are deterrent ploys to avert this behavior.

Fix summer: These months pushes puppies to look for places that are cooler when playing in the yard. They would tend to dig for a deeper one for them to let cool off heat. To stop puppies from digging, try to look for an area where you can dig by yourself and try to make him look at what you are doing; he would think that you are doing him a favor while doing this. The feeling of being taken care of is a reason for them to be grateful; towards you. They will never know that what you are doing is to avoiding some blank spots in the yard that could make your landscape ugly.

For some pet owners who can afford to build a wading pool, nice cool water on the dog’s back is a perfect solution to the scorching heat. Cooling off is an excellent respite from the humid air and direct sunlight felt during this season. This is so far the best remedy to stop puppies from digging as you need not worry about further holes on the ground. One might not be able get a puppy to obey anything if the uneasiness felt inside his body system is brought about by heat.

How to Stop a Dog From Jumping on People

How to Stop a Dog From Jumping on People

Having a canine that jumps on everyone can be not only annoying but also dangerous. If he or she is a large breed, they could knock down a child or elderly person and cause injuries. Here is how to stop dog from jumping because it is just bad manners.

We have to understand that dogs jump and leap because they are happy and excited. They run up to us for affection and in greeting. This behavior is actually caused by the way we interact them. We are very inconsistent. Sometimes jumping is tolerated and sometimes we hate it, giving the dog a reprimand. This does nothing but confuse the animal, which is just happy to see you.

Jumping up on people actually starts when a canine is just a puppy. We kneel down to pet and give affection to them and let them jump up on our knees. They are allowed to put their paws on us when they are wanting attention or are excited to be fed. We usually give them attention face to face. When they are older and bigger, suddenly it is not so cute anymore. But they are just trying to get back on a face to face level with us.

There is no easy solution to this particular problem. You definitely do not want to hit the pup because that won't solve anything and may make them fear you. You need to teach your dog the sit-stay command. This is just giving him a different way to greet you. If he is sitting, he can't be jumping. When you walk in the door, give him the command. Ignore him until he does it. Then, kneel down and give your hugs and greetings. Have your friends do the same thing when they come over. He will eventually catch on to the idea.

This is an issue that quite simply should never be tolerated. Not only does it give the impression your pet is badly misbehaved, it can cause a lot of problems. Try this method on how to stop dog from jumping, give it time, and see if it works for you and your pooch.

Dog Digging Problems - How to Train Your Dog to Stop Digging

Dog Digging Problems - How to Train Your Dog to Stop Digging

Your dog is a digger. She's put holes in your garden, she's put holes in your yard, she's put holes in the neighbor's yard and you just can't seem to figure out why. Dogs and all canines are diggers by nature, it's a behavior that can be traced back to their oldest ancestors, but that doesn't mean a little training can't solve the problem.

There are a number of reasons as to why a dog will dig. Digging behaviors can be traced back to the dog's ancestry - wolves who use the skill for survival purposes.

Caching

Most canines like to cache things. In the wild this is typically food, and if a wolf or other canine has too much food on hand, it often gets buried in a special spot that he will remember. This is useful during period where food is more difficult to find. Having extra food stored for raining days is a good habit for them.
Your dog may decide to bury food in a cache, but it could just as easily be anything at all that your dog has decided to treasure: a favorite toy, an old bone, even a stolen shoe. In fact, some dogs may decide to hide things that they might have stolen simply as a game.

Hot and Cold Issues

Dogs, certain breeds in particular, can be very sensitive to temperature. A long haired snow dog might get over warm in the summer heat and so dig a hole in the shade to cool off in. The earth a few inches down is often much cooler than the surface which is heated by the sun.

Short haired dogs may feel the cold much more than others and so might dig down a bit into the ground. This gives them a slightly more insulated place to lie down and shields them from the wind.

Separation Anxiety

Dogs with separation problems may try feverishly to dig out of any enclosure to get back to their owner. The frenzied nature which often accompanies this type of digging can make this a dangerous task for your dog.

Hunting

Certain breeds of dogs have been bred to pursue small mammals. Terrier dogs are breed to hunt and may enjoy digging into animal holes to get their prey.

Fun

Most dogs just enjoy digging out of fun, tearing up your entire yard and leaving many little holes behind. This kind of digging is often accompanied by lots of galloping around and general canine merriment.

Before you even try to stop your dog digging behavior, you might want to think and figure out why he dig in the first place. Most of these types of digging come with fairly obvious indicators, so it shouldn't take much time before you have your answer.

For a dog that caches treats and treasures, the simplest way is to not give out these treats and treasures unless your dog will finish them or else is indoors. Failing this, it's possible to designate a special place in the yard just for digging. You can bury some of his favorite treats in this special spot and encourage him to dig and retrieve them. You may need to work with the dog for a bit before he'll understand that the digging pit is the only spot for digging, and this is best done by simply distracting your dog from digging elsewhere and redirecting him to the digging area.

A dog that is trying to keep himself comfortable due to the climate should always be given in to. Provide a hot dog with shade and a nice cool surface. Dogs like to lay spread out on hard surfaces that stay cool in the shade such as concrete or metal. Provide plenty of water, and perhaps even a kiddy pool for the dog to cool off in.

Dogs that love to dig for fun can be trained to dig on allocated digging area. You may also choose to fence off areas you would not like to be dug in. Some dog trainers suggest leaving your dog's feces in the holes, though unless your dog is digging repeatedly in a single spot, this is not much of a deterrent. Distracting your dog and rewarding him when he stops digging may be your best option.

Crate Training an Akita

Crate Training an Akita

Introduce Your Akita to The crate

Place the crate in a room where family members gather or use a lot. A dining room for example is ideal. Put the crate in a corner where it is not in the way of anything. Make the bottom of the crate comfortable by placing a few blankets inside. Put a few doggy toys and treats near the door. Take your dog over to the crate and speak to him soothingly. Lie down near the door and direct your dog to pick up a treat just inside of the crate. So he has to put his head inside. Praise him when he does.

Throw some treats deeper into the crate so the dog has to enter to retrieve them. If he does this, then praise him and stroke him. If he refuses accept it, do not under any circumstances force him into the crate. This will be his home, a place he will spend a lot of his time so he must associate it with positive feelings. If he does not enter the crate straight away. Just continue to coax him with treats and soothing talk.

Once you get him to enter the crate start to lock the door for a few minutes to begin with. Stay in the same room where he can see you and continue to talk to him. Release him after a few minutes then repeat the process.

Start to place the puppy into the crate for five minutes at a time, then ten minutes. Once you have achieved this start to put him into the crate while you leave the room for a short time. Gradually increase the time he is in the crate and the length of time you leave the room.

By patient training and slow incremental steps you will build, his confidence up until he will realise the crate is his place of safety.

Michael Bean is an author and dog lover. He lives in the north of England with his family and dogs. He is the author of "all About Your Akita" and hosts the website http://www.yourakita.com

Crate Training Puppies

Crate Training Puppies When it comes to housebreaking, crate training puppies is probably the best method of education. Most veterinarians recommend this technique over all others. By nature, dogs enjoy having their own small, personal space. They understand how to take care of this area, which includes not soiling the floor. This is the primary reason why crate training is such a good idea when housebreaking your dogs.

In order to properly train your puppies, you must have a crate that is just the right size for them. This may mean paying a small one now and upgrading at a later date, but the size is important. You want to be sure your dog has enough room to step in, turn around, and lie down inside the crate. Having one that is too large can cause the puppy to use the restroom on one end and lay on the other, which defeats the purchasing of crate training. The location of the crate should be a quiet area, as your dog is likely to use it as a place to rest during the day and sleep at night.

The difficulty involving crate training puppies will depend on the dog. Some will love having their own place, while others will need a bit of coaxing in the beginning. Getting your dog to like his crate can involve treats if necessary. Place a treat inside the crate and command your dog to go inside. Eventually, your puppy will start to go in and look for a treat even when you have not commanded him.

Insecure puppies need a great deal of patience when crate training. You may have to begin by shutting the door and standing nearby for a few seconds, then opening it back up and presenting the dog with a treat. You can then work your way up from there. Eventually, you want to be able to shut the door with the dog inside the crate and then leave the room for several minutes without it stressing your dog out. If you have a whining dog, do not let him out while it is still making noise. Allow it to get quiet before letting him out. Also, do not make letting him out be an exciting event, or he will never want to stay inside his crate. Never use the crate as punishment if you want him to enjoy the area.

Once you have completed the crate training portion of housebreaking, you can then work on getting your dog to go out at certain times. It is important that you puppy be on a strict eating schedule if you are going to be letting him outdoors at certain times. He will learn to hold it and eliminate when he is allowed outside. Dogs can typically wait one hour for every month of their age. Therefore, a two month old dog will need to be let out every two hours to use the restroom. Do not punish your puppy for occasional accidents, especially while you are still working on getting him housebroken.

Crate training puppies is possibly the most effective way to housebreak your pet. With the crate, he will have a nice place of his own that he will not want to mess up. Therefore, he will learn not to go inside the house, and can get on a schedule of going when he is let outside.

How to Stop Dogs From Digging Holes

How to Stop Dogs From Digging Holes

Before we discover how to stop dogs from digging holes, it is worthwhile knowing the reason behind why they do.

Here are some of the primary reasons why a dog will want to dig a hole:

Boredom To discover the unknown Lack of exercise Separation anxiety

If a dog is digging holes through boredom, there are many toys that can be bought that will keep him occupied. You could try making your own devices to keep him occupied. Good ones to make involve using frozen dog food and drink that release bits of food slowly as it melts. Use your imagination here.

Some dogs are just inquisitive. Its like the grass is always greener on the other side. It's difficult to know how to stop dogs from digging holes in these cases because it isn't the digging that they desire, it's the great yonder. They just want to explore and digging is the means to an end. The only real things you can do here to stop him attempting to dig is either, keep him inside or maybe crate train him.

The answer speaks for itself here. If your dog is digging holes through lack of exercise, he will need a lot more of it. Depending on the size, breed and health of your dog you will have to adjust the exercise routine accordingly. An average dog would probably want a very vigorous forty five minutes to an hour exercise daily minimum.

Separation anxiety is a whole new can of worms and will have to be addressed in a separate article.

Some dogs like to dig holes for the sake of it. They just love to do it as a hobby or leisure activity. Following are a few tips on how to stop dogs from digging holes for fun.

This is probably the best way and the same as for adventurous dogs. Simply keep him away from the yard until you can be there with him to monitor what he is doing. If you are concerned that your dog is digging up your flowers, plant some hardy and robust plants and ones with deep roots such as roses, so that he won't be able to dig around them. Nearly all dogs won't dig anywhere in the vicinity of dog mess. They will retreat from the area because they don't want to get their wonderful coats and their paws soiled with dog mess. Use nature's natural deterrent. An excellent way to stop dogs digging holes but more costly and time intensive, is to lay chicken wire about 2 or 3 inches below the top of the soil of grass. After a few tries at digging and not getting anywhere, he will soon learn that it's a waste of his time, and give up.

You could always find your dog an area of his own to dig away to his hearts content if you have the space. It has to be instilled into him that he must not dig anywhere else apart from his patch.

If you have space but don't want him to dig in your beloved garden at all, you could by him a sand box are even make one yourself for him. This is a portable solution so it can be moved around the garden to suit yourself.

Stop Your Dog's Digging

Stop Your Dog's Digging

Is your dog digging holes in your lawn-or perhaps digging up your garden? Digging is a common problem many dog owners have to face and figure out how to stop. There could be a variety of reasons why your dog may be digging up your yard. Some of the reasons for digging are boredom, an attempt to escape the yard, trying to dig down to cooler soil in times of hot weather, or because your breed of dog may have a predisposition for digging. I often see my own dogs scratch away the top soil around a recently watered palm tree to get at the cooler sand after I give them a good watering.

I have a friend who has a whole pack of unruly dogs that do all sorts of crazy stuff. One of their specialties is digging holes in his driveway. We live at the beach, and the driveway is really just packed sand, so it's pretty easy for the dogs to dig big holes. He showed me a giant hole in front of his gate, that prevented him from driving his truck through. The dogs had done their excavating during his shopping trip to town. It seemed pretty obvious that his dogs had dug the big hole in an aborted escape attempt. They really didn't like being left behind and often dig up his driveway in an effort to follow his truck.

Sometimes his dogs will dig out of boredom or to get at the cooler soil next to a tree that has been recently watered. On other occasions his dogs have dug their monster holes in different areas away from a gate. It's a good thing his yard is mostly sand. those dogs would have proved disastrous to a lawn. Still, the driveway problem was reason enough to stop his dogs from continuing their digging ways.

My neighbor asked if I had any ideas. Actually, I did. I then told him about an idea I had read in one of my dog training books. The idea was simple but turned out to be super-effective.

We built his dogs their own area where they were free to dig without it being a problem.Since we live at the beach, my friend's yard is all sand, so it was only necessary to enclose an appropriate area with fencing to make the acceptable digging area. The area should have shade to protect it form the sun, so if you can't put it under a tree, you can install a shade cloth for protection instead. It should always have some drinking water and play toys too. My neighbor's dogs even get to enjoy a little wading pool that he put in for them. They have a pretty nice set up, so they don't mind staying there while he is away in town.

Why not try this technique in you own yard to prevent your dog from digging holes in your lawn or garden area. Just pick a suitable well shaded area for the enclosure somewhere in your yard. To make your dog's digging spot, it is a great idea to install a sandbox, which you should fill with a mix of loose soil and sand so it'll be easy to dig in. By giving him this alternative place to do his digging it will spare your nice lawn from his efforts to destroy it.

Give this method a try and you should have solved the problem of your dog digging up the yard problem. Not only will this advice prevent your dog from ruining your yard with his digging, but he will be really comfortable and happy in his own play area.

I hope you can use this helpful tip to stop your dog's digging problems. For more advice to stop dog digging problems and for other dog obedience training tips, please check out my website-just click here to visit. BehaveDoggy.com

Facts About Crate Training Pomeranian Dog

Facts About Crate Training Pomeranian Dog Amid the entire house training sessions, crate training is regarded as the fundamental house training for your Pomeranian. There are a number of great reasons for crate training Pomeranian. It is a rather simple task so long as you train the dog at early age.

Why Your dog Love Dog crates
Whilst wild dogs stay in caves, it is precisely the same that goes with your Pomeranian's ancestors. This is a spot where canines squander time snoozing and it is also a protected shelter exactly where they can go to for protection from other types of wild animals.

For tamed canines, it's not just a safe haven for them but also a sanctuary and a small territory. These dogs think a lot more protected as well as comfortable in their very own shelter.

Setting the Stage
Before starting crate training your dog, you might want to expose him to his new surrounding, provide him a little extra time to settle down.

To start with crate training, let your dog get access to his crate. Permit him to go in and out or you may also feed your dog there. Because of this, your dog will learn that this can be the place exactly where he could be safe as well as comfy. Remember, the crate should be big enough for the dog to move around though not too big to litter.

Closing the Door
When your pooch has already adapted to his or her crate, it is best to now start crating your dog for short amount of time and then adding the length of time.

Be sure that they're going to see you while in the early phase of crate training to reduce and avoid separation anxiety. This will definitely help alleviate problems with any type of negative habits even while he is in the crate.

Remember that you can't bring the dog out of the crate whenever he cries or whines. This could impact crate training. Poms are smart. In case you carry your pet out of the crate the moment he whines, then he will take advantage of this situation by simply crying or whining every time the dog wants to get out.

Combating Separation Anxiety
Separation anxiety is considered the Pom dog behaviours that you need to keep in mind. If ever you are unsuccessful to effectively crate train your dog at young age, this will really be tough to deal with in the future.

He must be restricted in the crate when you need to go out of the house. It is a spot where he can really feel protected and also more comfortable.

When crate training is achieved, it will be easier to leave your house without worrying regarding your dog developing undesirable behaviour or even hear any problems from your neighbour as a result of excessive barking or whining.

Dog Bites and Attacks

Dog Bites and Attacks

Despite the fact that the number of dogs in the United States has only risen 2% between 1991 and 1998, the number of dog bites has risen dramatically in the last 20 years.

Often dog bites or attacks are related to the owners' failure to properly restrain their dog or the dog's vicious tendencies.

Dog owners are automatically responsible for their dogs if a dog has displayed vicious propensities on a previous occasion. Society places the risk of keeping dangerous animals on the owner. Dog owners can also be held liable for their negligence in maintaining the dog when they fail to follow local rules for maintaining pets, such as leash laws and other ordinances. An experienced Baltimore dog bite attorney can help dog bite victims successfully pursue personal injury case and answer any questions about dog bites and attacks.

Injuries After a Dog Bite or Attack

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, dogs bite approximately 4.7 million people each year. Dog bites and attacks can range from minor scratches to serious injuries that may require surgery. The American Medical Association reports that almost 17% of dog bites each year are serious enough to require medical attention. Some of the most common injuries that result from a dog bite or animal attack include:

Scarring Nerve damage Fractured bones Physical disfigurement Death

The Most Dangerous Dogs

Fatalities are highly unusual in dog bites and attacks and statistics show that there is only one fatal attack for each 151,000 victims. What they lack in frequency, however, canine homicides make up for in horror, grief and loss. According to a study conducted by Merritt Clifton, editor of Animal People, some of breeds of dog that may attack and leave life-threatening, if not fatal, injuries include:

Pit Bull Rottweiler German Shepherd Presa Canario

However, breeds of dog do not explain the risk I all cases.  It is up to the owners to know their dog's disposition and train them well to prevent dog bites and attacks.

Dog Owner Liability

Liability for dog owners may be created in one of three ways:

Dog-bite statute: the dog owner is automatically liable for any injury or property damage the dog causes without provocation or the breed is banned in a certain county Vicious Propensities: the dog owner is responsible for an injury caused by a dog if the owner knew or should have known the dog was vicious Negligence laws: the dog owner is liable if the injury occurred because the dog owner was unreasonably careless (negligent) in controlling the dog

Five Basic and Cool Tricks to Train Your Dog

Five Basic and Cool Tricks to Train Your Dog

Dogs are very lovable and clever animals. They make great pets for every people with different needs. Statistics have shown that thirty-seven percent of American homes own at least two dogs. It becomes further interesting to be aware that a typical American dog possessor spends $ 200 to $ 400 dollars for their lovable pet's grooming maintenance, fitness, and nourishment.

Depending on the size, weight, and breed, dogs possess different abilities. Dogs can differ according to intelligence and how quick they can grasp a command, but all dogs can be trained. Dogs, however, like the Rottweilers, are larger and aggressive breeds so one needs to be more adept at training them. The following tips are few of the many sample tricks that you can teach your dog.

The "kiss" trick
The first is the "kiss" trick. This trick is where you can teach your dog to lick your hand on your command. You can repeatedly say "kiss me" or any command that you want that conveys kissing. Again, the dog will connect the sound and tone of your voice to kissing. When they have become familiarized with the trick, don't forget to give your dogs a praise such as "good boy!" While patting his head. Your dog will comprehend and recognize that his owner appreciates what he is doing. A dog loves to be rewarded.

The "paw" trick
This is the easiest trick to learn. It involves shaking your hand with the dog's paw. Begin this by making your dog sit, and then reach out your hand into holding his paw. Upon reaching his paw say "paw". He may not understand the human language "paw" but he can associate its sound with his own paw. If he reaches out his paw to you, then it means that he has starte to get the point. If not, just pat him gently on the head to show him you can be trusted with whatever you want him to do.

The "catch" trick
This trick is a very popular trick to for many dogs to learn. Dogs are active animals and they will surely love to catch something for their owner. You simply cast your dog's favorite toy and he will, for sure, go after and catch it. Make sure that the treat is big enough for them to see it and small enough to prevent choking. Do this repeatedly to make your dogs familiarize with the command.

The "fetch" trick
This is another simple trick that is very easy to teach to the dogs because fetching is their inherent ability. It has the same command to the "catch" trick but this involves a toy instead of a treat. You can simply throw any toy that you want your dog to fetch. It can be a ball, a Frisbee or a twig. Do this repeatedly in an open area especially if you are talking your dog out for a walk. This trick makes for a good dog exercise and activity. But always don't forget to reward your dog a treat every time he does tricks well.

The "beg" trick
While the first tricks are far simpler, here comes a more complex and skilled one: The "beg" trick. Start off by making your dog stand on his hind legs. Then make him hold a dog treat on his nose, afterwards, bring it slowly farther from him. Make sure that you continuously say "beg" then give him the treat. Again, he may not understand the language but he will develop a recognition of the voice as an act of begging for his treat. Do it repeatedly while waiting a little longer before handing the treat over for the dog to identify a closer association of your command in human language to the action it conveys.

There are many ways to teach tricks to our dogs whether simple or complex. They are generally clever domestic animals and with emotions too like us humans. One just have to be apt at teaching them. Make sure also that the tricks matches the dog's breed. Talk your veterinarians and breeders for the best dog training know-how.

How To Stop Puppy Chewing

How To Stop Puppy Chewing

Puppy Chewing Problems

You have recently brought home your new puppy and he is settling in well, except for the constant chewing?  It may be that you do not mind his chewing, but that he is slowly working his way through your shoes, the kid’s toys and has been eyeing off the cushions?  You may be wondering when exactly this habit will cease?  And if you are then that is perfectly natural, as it is also perfectly natural for your puppy to chew.

Puppies will chew for a wide range of reasons, including because they are cutting new teeth, or they may be bored.  The key is that you need to let your puppy chew, but you also need to let your puppy know early on what is acceptable and what is not.  Like all training, the earlier you establish the rules and guidelines the quicker and better behaved your puppy will be.

 Adjusting your Puppy’s Behavior

Start by taking a deep breath, it is going to take some time to adjust your puppy’s chewing behavior, so be prepared to be calm and consistent with your instructions throughout the process.  Perhaps if you have special shoes, or cushions, that you put these well out of puppy reach for now.

Talk to your kids as well, knowing that the puppy may eat all their toys could be the motivation they need to keep their room clean.  In addition they need to know that yelling or hitting your dog will not help them learn, it will only confuse, so instead create a plan for dealing with the chewing that covers the following tips:

Puppy Chewing Toys’ when you notice your puppy chewing on something they should not, grab one of your puppy’s chew toys and give it to them.  When they starts to chew on it, give him or her lots of praise and encouragement.  Remember a puppy wants to make you happy, so they will slowly realize that chewing on this makes you happy.

Make sure your puppy chewing toys are not similar to other important items.  For example an old shoe or stuffed toy is not good choices because your puppy can get confused between the old shoe and the new ones.

Wear out Your Puppy Try to avoid puppy boredom.  Take them for walks, play with them and work on your commands.  Dogs love interacting with you, learning tricks and being rewarded.

Crate Training A common problem is that your puppy may be good when you are home, but when you go out, they get into the things they shouldn’t.  If this is the case you could consider trying Crate Training.  See our article on how this can assist your puppy.

Averting the Action - There are some things that you cannot put out of reach of your puppy, like the couch, so for these things try using a bitter apple or cayenne pepper spray.  Before you do so, check to ensure that you are not going to damage the item by testing it first.  These sprays are not tasty to your dog, but are safe for humans, so can be a good option on some objects.

Re-enforcement do not let it stop with these things, if you come home from work and your puppy is chewing on his or her toy, give plenty of praise.  You can do this whenever you see them doing the right thing.

 Training your Puppy

Over time these actions will if performed calmly and consistently by all in your household will train your puppy.  Ensure that you continue to reward good behaviour and enforce your rules so your puppy grows up knowing you are the alpha leader.

Should You Start Potty Training Early?

Should You Start Potty Training Early?

Is your child ready for toilet training?
Many parents start potty training children between 18 months and three years of age. But, if you watch for the signs of readiness your child may just be ready to start early. As long as they can understand your instructions, and can physically accomplish the task at hand you can slowly begin the process.

Readiness signs to look for

Your child wants to wear underwear Their bowel movements are on a timely schedule If the child is uncomfortable in a diaper If the child asks you about, or shows interest in the potty If the child can understand and follow simple directions

Contrary to popular belief there is no magic age to start the potty training process. Every child's development and growth is different, and unique. Some children will be able to understand and follow the process at two years old, while others may not until almost four years old.

Even if your child isn't showing all of the tell tale signs of readiness, you can still offer encouragement. There is a vast selection of potty training DVDs, dolls, and books at your disposal. If a child starts watching a potty training DVD they might become interested and pay closer attention to the process at an earlier age than if they weren't introduced to it at all.

Giving your child a say
Many children act up and continue to act up until they feel their voice is heard. Bringing your child into the potty training process can help. Bring them to the store and let them select the underwear they want. Buy them stickers and let them decorate their little potty as they see fit. Encouraging them along the way at all times is extremely important.

A word of caution
The toilet training process is an important part of development. Punishing a child for having an accident, or misinterpreting your instructions will have severe consequences. Not only will it set back your potty training efforts but it can scar their psyche. Accidents are a part of the training, and you should deal with them by showing as little emotion as possible. Children can read their parents and will know if your upset by something they did.

A Dog Training Lesson

A Dog Training Lesson

A Dog Training Lesson

Are you looking for some dog training tips?  Perhaps you have some dog problems that you just can’t figure out how to handle.  Maybe you’re in the middle of training a puppy.  Training dogs can be frustrating and a lot of hard work, but it is so worthwhile.

I’m by no means an expert in dog training.  But through my many years on this earth I have always had dogs in my life.  Most of them have been rescue dogs.  I would suggest rescue dogs for anyone interested in getting a new dog.  It’s a wonderful feeling and you will never regret it.

Now, on to the purpose of this article and this short dog training course. Over the years I’ve tried many different dog  training techniques to deal with dog problems that I’ve encountered.  Many times with rescue dogs, especially older rescue dogs, they might have some bad habits that their previous owner just didn’t want to deal with.  Those are the dogs I love to take because they end up being so lovable and sweet once you deal with the dog problem.

One dog training technique that has been very successful for me has been something so simple and yet so effective.

What I do is take a small tin can and put a few pennies in it.  Sometimes I will have a few cans around the house so they are handy when I need them.

When your dog exhibits a behavior that is not welcomed, just give the can a shake and at the same time say “No!”  This catches the dog’s attention and startles them.  They don’t like the sound of the pennies in the can, and after doing this a few times, you’ll see  that the unwanted behavior stops.  So what you are doing is conditioning the dog  to know that when they do the unwanted behavior, they will hear this noise that they don’t like, and therefore after a few times they will stop the behavior.  After a few times, you won’t even have to use the can but only say “No!” and they will stop the unwanted behavior.

This is why I have a few cans around the house because you want them handy so you can shake the can immediately when the dog is doing the unwanted behavior.

I’ve used this technique on a number of dog problems that I’ve had through the years.  It’s been especially helpful in stopping dogs from barking too much.  One of my dogs was a very yappy dog until I tried this technique.  After a few shakes of the can, he now does not bark all the time and is much more pleasant to be around.

Another dog problem I’ve handled with this technique is a disgusting behavior of eating their own feces.  I know, so disgusting.  Two of my dogs now have done this in the past and I was so happy when this technique worked for them.  I would have to watch them while they were outside for a few days and keep a window open.  Then when they started going toward their own feces with an eye to eating it, I would shake the can from the window and that was enough to stop them.  It only took a few times.

I hope you will try this technique and let me know if it works for you.  I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

Also, I have found another great dog training book that has some great simple ideas to help with dog problems that you might want to try.  The title is Secrets to Dog Training, formerly known as SitStayFetch.  It’s a great resource, PLUS you get six bonus books with it.

Crate Training For Your Dog

Crate Training For Your Dog

You need to be aware that it takes a period of time for your dog to love the crate particularly when they have a negative relation to it. The first thing you should remember is to be patient and to understand that they do not like the crate, and they need time to overcome it.

Start by feeding your dog every meal in the crate. Put the food bowl in the back. Your dog now has to go to the back to eat breakfast and dinner. If this is too stressful you may have to put the food in the front of the crate. As your dog starts to get comfortable, you can gradually move it further and further into the crate.

Anytime you give a treat, toss the treat into the crate. Try to get her to go in the back to get the treat. Again if this is too stressful put the treat in the front and gradually move it further and further into the back. Do not shut the door when your dog goes inside. At this point we are just working on getting your dog to go into it.

When ever you give a new toy toss the toy into the rear. Always try to get him to go in for the toy.

As your she starts to become comfortable with the crate you can start to close the door, but don't latch it, while she is eating. It's important that you do not latch the door and that if your dog pushes it the door opens.

Over time as your pup becomes comfortable being in the crate with the door shut you can start to latch the door. At first latching the doors should only be for a few seconds to a minute. Again getting your dog to love it is a gradual process that will take a little time.

When you let your dog out, you can make a big deal about it. Praise, play, and tell her what a good girl she is, etc. This way when your dog comes out your dog will be happy.

When you have to put your dog in the crate don't make a big deal over it or fuss. It's important that you act very matter-of-fact as you put your puppy into the crate. If you start to become emotional it will stress your her out.

The only way to get your dog to love the crate is by associating it as a fun and positive place to be this can be done by pairing it with anything that your dog likes. I once worked with a canine that loved a plastic watering can. We use this as a reward in you can do the same thing with anything that your dog loves. Good luck!

How To Stop Dogs From Biting

How To Stop Dogs From Biting

Hands up if you have needed to ask at least once how to stop your dog from biting - or someone else's dog, for that matter. Dealing with dog biting is, understandably, quite a frightening and stressful problem. Whilst the first time may be a nip, arising from obnoxious behavior,(the dog's behavior, not yours!), it can quickly escalate into a more determined and aggressive bite. This is extemely dangerous, as your dog will probably get bigger and stronger, and will definitely get older and more determined. As a result, it's instinct to protect what it perceives as its domain, could eventually result in potentially violent aggression. Take a step back for a moment and consider things from your dogs perspective. If you don't teach him the correct behavior, how can be possibly be blamed for doing what comes naturally as a survival mechanism. It is absolutely essential that you teach your dog from a young age that biting in any form is not acceptable behavior. This is your responsibility as the owner of your dog, to ensure the safety of not only your children and family members, but also other people (and their pets) that may come across your dog.

How to Stop Dogs from Biting as Puppies

Yes, puppies are cute, but they also have razor-sharp teeth! Teaching your puppy not to bite is almost a no-brainer as their fellow puppies are teaching them already that there are consequences to biting! Now, I don't recommend that you bite your puppy back, but one way to curb their natural instinct to chew and bite is to "yelp" like another puppy when they bite, to let them know that they have hurt you. You may think, why is it such a big deal, puppies can't really do much harm and they're only playing? Wrong! When your puppy bites, what he's really doing is trying to assert him and raise his status to puppy pack-leader! I know I said you need not bite your puppy back, but it is also generally acceptable to give your puppy a gentle nip on the back of the neck whilst "yelping", as a way of mimicking what his mother and fellow pups would do. You can also try substituting a toy for your hand when he tries to bite you - he needs to learn, "bite toy" = ok, "bite hand" = not ok). This problem won't go away if you try to ignore it, so if nothing seems to work for you, be sure to get help from a professional.

How to Stop Dogs from Biting After One Year of Age

Ten pounds of biting puppy is nothing compared to a hundred pounds of biting teenage canine! If you have a genuine biting problem with your puppy, then for goodness sake, resist the urge to play dominance related games with him such as tug-o-war, wrestling or play attack. If you continue with such games and ignore this behavior, imagine what could happen when he's around one year of age and children come to visit! Likely Outcome Number 1: your dog sees the visiting children as a threat to his territory. Likely Outcome Number 2: your dog tries to assert his dominance on said children, and Likely Outcome Number 3: you have to pull your dog off the children, who are by now, distressed, crying and quite possibly "bitten"! Try apologizing to the distraught parents!

As horrifying as this scenario might seem, there are certainly steps you can take to ensure this doesn't happen. As mentioned, stop the dominance games, don't permit your dog to have the run of the house, stop your dog from taking liberties such as jumping on the furniture and teach him what to expect from you when he behaves well. By giving your dog boundaries, you will be doing him and yourself a huge favor. Let's face it! Dogs and kids have a lot in common. They both thrive in a firm but loving environment, they feel safe and secure knowing that you are in charge; they learn to respect and respond to your rules, knowing that these are all necessary to keep things in balance.

If, despite your best efforts, you still find yourself with a one year old teenage dog that bites, then don't waste any time getting them to a good obedience program. You and your dog both need help to fix the problem.

How to Stop Dogs from Biting when they Get Older

It's a sad fact of life that as we age, often we become less tolerant of ... well, everything and anything! It's no different with canines.

So if your dog is getting on in years and has been allowed to get away with nipping and biting, imagine what it might do if it completely loses it! This "break" might result in your dog actually turning on you, the owner, simply because your dog has always regarded himself as the Alpha dog, the pack-leader, and now you're annoying him!

As soon as your dog reaches the benchmark of one year of age, you seriously need to evaluate the pack status in your home. Are you the leader or is your dog? If your dog considers him the leader, it's only a matter of time before he starts to assert his dominance on the rest of the household, possibly resulting in a full-blown attack. Prevent this from ever happening by starting early with training. If you have problems along the way, then by all means, seek help from experts. There are plenty of resources available.

Are you desperately seeking advice on How To Stop Dogs From Biting ? Get more tips and advice here today. While you are there, you can pick up a free report on How to be the Alpha dog. This report will show you how to take control of your home, and become the master of your house.

Walking 2 Dogs on Leash - 5 Behaviors You Can Adopt to Stop Leash Pulling

Walking 2 Dogs on Leash - 5 Behaviors You Can Adopt to Stop Leash Pulling

Exercise is key to human health. It's also of utmost importance to a dog's health and behaviors. Most dogs given up for adoption are victims of misbehavior. Misbehavior in most cases can be resolved with a simple thing called exercise.

Dogs that incessantly pull on the leash end up not getting walked very often. The behavior can be so irritating for the dog owner that the dog ends up getting exercise in the backyard only. Backyard exercise, in most cases, doesn't happen either. Unless there is structured interaction, the dog usually spends a short time digging a fabulous hole or tearing the screen door to get back inside. After getting bored with the destruction, a big nap is in order.

Many people end up getting another dog with the thought that it will keep the first dog entertained and therefore exercise will naturally occur. The initial idea is good, but when the owner finds that now there are two dogs with bad behavior due to no structured exercise and lack of training the disappointment and guilt can become overwhelming.

The best way to resolve these behavior issues is to get walking with the dogs. Walking two dogs on leashes at the same time can be a big challenge. With a little diligence the project can end up not only a huge success for the dog training and behavior issues, but you will also have fun and get much needed exercise for yourself.

Here are 5 things you can do to teach your dogs to walk on leash nicely.

Start by walking with one dog at a time. We tend to put the cart before the horse when trying to acquire a new habit. If one of your dogs cannot walk on leash without pulling, the hope that two dogs at the same time won't pull is next to impossible. Simply stop when your dog starts to pull. Dogs do what works. If you continue to let your dog pull on the leash, the behavior clearly works for your dog. If you stop every time your dog begins to pull, your dog will quickly figure out moving forward only happens when walking beside you. Moving only when your dog is beside you will train your dog to do what works. Use turning in 90-degree and 180-degree movements to keep your dog's attention. Walking the dog on leash usually means moving forward from one destination to another. Your dog is anticipating the forward motion. Keep your dog aware of his paws by changing your direction several times at the beginning of the walk. Stop canine anticipation by mixing 90-degree turns and 180-degree turns in the training exercise. Be patient. This is the hardest of all in adopting the new behaviors for teaching your dogs to walk on leash without pulling. A destination is at the forefront of our minds. Leave that idea behind and start focusing on being calm and taking as much time as needed to get your dogs to pay attention. The distance you cover may not be far, but the energy used in the teaching process will make up for lack of distance traveled. Keep the leash short. This dog training tip may be the most helpful of all when trying to get your dogs to stop pulling on the leash. It goes with the old adage if you give an inch, they'll take a mile. By giving your dog the entire six foot leash you are encouraging your dog to go out to the end. Give your dog only the 3 feet needed to walk near you.

Commit to taking each dog for a 15-minute walk for the next 7 days in a row. You'll find it does get easier as each day passes. Its a matter of being consistent. Make a game out of it. By putting a fun factor into it you'll be on the way to walking both dogs on a loose leash in less than 30 days.

Some people say – ‘Give your pet some dog treats and he’ll obey you’, while others say ‘It’s not necessary to give the pet dog treats only to make him obey you’.

Feeding you dog the treats he likes can be an advantage as well as a disadvantage. Sure at first your dog may need some bribery to obey you. But don’t do it every single time he obeys you and make it a bad habit. Avoid over feeding you pet, instead simply praise him more often and distinctly also give him the dog treats.

Remember when you were kid, how you would get a dollar for a good report card or some good thing you did? Similarly, he is your dog. Even he is thirsty for praises and appreciates your love in the form of dog treats and praises. Feed him the all natural dog treat which are extremely nourishing and very delicious too. Don’t simply misuse the treats and spoil your dog or over feed him. The best way is to utilize your dog mealtimes to teach him something new.

The training session should be regular but also should be short. Whenever you reward him with dog treats, the reward is likely to make him repeat the same. It is extremely essential that you are consistent throughout the training procedure which facilitates you to communicate properly with you dog. Expect more from your pet, but occasionally give him a bonus for a good job, as a dog mostly listens when he can see or smell a treat. Bear this in mind especially when your pet is learning a new thing. If he reacts the way you want, without doubt reward him instantly with a dog treat.

Your dog will soon be behaving the way you want and even more than that, as he wants to make you happy and also knows that, he'll occasionally get a dog treat, too. Dog treats can be a brilliant means for training your Dog, but only when used properly and fairly!
