Show Dog Training

Show Dog Training

Many people will train their dog for various sporting events such as Frisbee catching or obstacle races, then there are some that get into the show dog training aspect of it all. This is where your dog will be showcased as a class breed according to the AKC or CKC, and they will be judged for their appearance and demeanor. This is something that is extremely popular, and you will find some of the best dogs in the world are being trained to partake in such events around the world. This is a wonderful way for your dog to show their stuff, and you never know you could actually see your dog with the ribbon one day.

Composure

One of the most important aspects of the show dog training is composure. This is the demeanor that the dog is going to carry in the ring, when they are being viewed by the judge and the audience alike. When they are being checked over, they are expected to stay calm and collected. They will have their eyes and ears looked over, and the judge will look over the dog's teeth. This is when the dog must behave the most, as it would be an immediate fail if the dog reacted poorly to the judge handling them in this manner. If the dog cannot be trained to keep their composure, they will not be permitted to enter any one the contests that they are training for.

Following Commands

Show dog training means that the dog is going to have to pay close attention to the commands that are given when they are given. If the dog should fail to follow a command by either the handler or the judge, they will not be able to proceed in the event. The commands will be simple and direct, and if the dog is to go anywhere within the show circuit they are going to need to excel at this aspect. There is no room for error in this field, and your dog should be trained to understand this idea. The judge in this type of event has no patience for a dog that is unruly, so this is something that trainers pay particularly close attention too. This will ensure that the dog will not fall behind the pack, due to a misunderstanding. The dog will be trained to succeed, so they must now prove what they have learned.

Walking, Trotting, And Standing Tall

Show dog training will incorporate a few very basic yet critical practices when they are in their program. This means that sitting, standing, and any form of walking or trotting, will be done so with great pride and integrity. All of these actions will be used quite frequently when in a show, so it is vital for these to be worked on diligently with the trainers. There are very few trainers that will forego this type of training for something else early on, so you can expect that the dog will get a full schedule of it.

Dog Obedience Training Exercise

Dog Obedience Training Exercise

Dog obedience training is one of the most important areas of every dog's development. Training your puppy during their early stage of development can assure you that you would have a well-trained dog when he grows up. But the question is - when do is the best time to train your dog?

There is no exact answer to this question. Dog obedience training is an ongoing and continuous process. It would be best to start training your dog when they're still a puppy.

Once you train your dog to obey your commands, you bond even better as you open out a line for communicating effectively. You should be able to train your dog to understand simple commands like "sit, "heel", "come", "stay" and down". The dog should be trained to comply with the commands given by its owner.

Here some Dog Obedience Training Exercise:

1. Sit
The dog must always sit at your left side with his shoulder at your left knee. He must be facing the same direction as you, with about 4 inches between you. To train your dog to sit, first fold the leash in right hand. Give the dog's name and command 'sit'. At the same time, push down on his hindquarters with your left hand and jerk up on the leash with your hand. When he is in correct position. Praise him with a pat vocal praise.

2. Heeling on leash
The dog should walk with right shoulder about even with your left knee. With a loose leash, call the dog's name and give the command "heel". Immediately walk forward and give a hard jerk on the leash. If the first jerk does not make an impression, make the second harder. Never drag your dog. When you have jerked him into position at your left knee and the collar is loose, praise him with "good dog". Your dog will never learn with tight leash. Always follow a correction with praise. When you stop walking make your dog immediately sit and sit straight. Correct any crooked sits immediately, using your right hand on the hindquarters. Make sure the dog remains sitting until you are ready to start up again. Never allow him to stan up lie down, he must sit.

3. About Turn
Always turn away from your dog to your right to reverse your direction. Keep your eye on your dog consultantly and as you go into your turn, give several short, quick jerks.

4. Sit Stay
Have your dog in the sit position with the palm of the bump him on the nose and give the command "stay". Drop your leash in front of the dog. Turn facing him, and stand close to him on the leash. Remain there for a few seconds, pick up the leash and return by walking around behind him, and into heel position. Do not drag the leash across your dog. Your dog must not move until you release him. Correct him before he moves. Gradually increase the time your dog stays. Increase the distance between you and your dog until you can safely remove his leash.

5. Down
With the dog sitting, give the command "down" then push down on his shoulders, at the same time wobbling him off balance. A second method is to place the leash between the sole and the heel of your shoe. Give the command "down", and then pull up on the leash. Sometimes it is necessary to pull his legs forward until he goes down.

6. Down stay
After your dog is in the down position, give the command "stay", both orally and by signal, and drop the leash in front of him. Stand on the leash close to facing him. Remain there again for a few seconds and returns to him in the same manner as in the sit-stay. Again he must not move out of position. Gradually increase the time your dog stays. Increase the distance between you and your dog until you can safely remove his leash.

A Well Trained Canine

You have a new dog. Good for you! So, what will you do next? In the event you teach your pet the proper way he'll be a lot happier. The following advice will explain what you ought to know for successfully training your dog.

If you're trying to crate train your pet, keep in mind that it's a multi-step process. Whenever your canine seems to be comfortable while within the crate with the doorway ajar, it is possible to help him adapt to the dog crate even more by slowly securing the doorway and rewarding him with doggie snacks given to him from the spaces between the wires. In the beginning, leave your dog enclosed within the dog crate for just brief amounts of time, for example 10 seconds, and after that progressively increase the length. When the dog exhibits indications of distress, you might be progressing too rapidly.

When dog training for particular commands, make sure to use the very same wording in the course of everyday activity as you do in the course of training times. If you choose "down" for "lay down", use "down" each time you want your dog to lay down. Altering the terms can befuddle your pet and hinder training.

Set up a good plan for what you would like to achieve with the dog training. When you have objectives marked on the calendar it can provide you with a means to measure how well you're progressing with all the dog training, and give you suggestions about whether you will need to alter anything within your routine.

When dog training using a leash, make certain you are keeping the dog collar snug, but a bit loose. If the dog collar is just too firm, it could make your dog wish to pull you. Just a little slack can significantly help when you're training your dog using a lead.

Have overall flexibility when teaching your dog. Be prepared to vary or alter a routine when it isn't working. You may have to try various locations or times during the day. You may want to alter the length of your instruction schedule if it's too long a period, or way too short.

In addition to standard walks and canine training periods, you need to take the time to allow your doggy physical exercise not less than an hour every single day. Keeping your dog healthy with physical exercise permits more effective training sessions in the long run. Dogs that exercise are more joyful and much more responsive.

Both the canine and owner are more happy if the pet dog is well-trained. With this particular article, you've learned some tricks and tips you should use when the time comes to teach your beloved doggy.

The Basics When It Comes To Dog Training

Many people all over the world have dogs as pets. Dogs make great pets because they are loyal, friendly, and obedient. Although dogs have all of these great qualities, sometimes, they can be hard to train. The tips in the following article should help you train your dog. http://www.delicious.com/MyWebPromotion/training

Dog Aggression Problems - Learn Why Your Dog is Aggressive

Dog Aggression Problems - Learn Why Your Dog is Aggressive

Dogs are instinctively aggressive animals. Having evolved from living as a pack animal and needing to survive in the wild through their hunting skills, dogs needed their aggressive natures in order to survive. In today's society, however, we must be sure to correct our pet's aggressive natures if they become a problem. To learn how to control your dog's aggression problem, it is a good idea first to understand the reasons behind dog aggression problems. Below is a list of the most common reasons for dog aggression problems.

Dominance Aggression:  When dogs meet they need to establish who is the dominant dog, and conversely, who is the submissive dog. This is part of their natures that was developed through being pack animals, and is important for harmony in the pack that each dog understands its place in the pack's hierarchy. Usually the dogs agree on who is the boss dog, and go on with their business without any fighting problems. Dominance displays will normally only lead to a dog fight if one of the dogs refuses to become submissive to the other dog.

Fear Aggression:  This type of aggression is very different than dominance aggression. In this case the dog is so overcome with anxiety that it actually lashes out at whatever is causing its fear. For instance, a dog that may have been abused by a former master, will likely show fear aggression if it is scared of a particular person-especially if that person is doing something to agitate the poor dog. This is easily recognizable-the dog will display a cringing, very disturbed body language that includes tucking the tail up between the legs, baring all its teeth while snarling, whining and moaning. It may also snap its teeth and lunge at anything nearby, so you want to avoid trying to comfort a dog in this state.

Territorial Aggression:  Many dogs display this type of aggressive behavior. It too is quite natural and stems from the dog's instinct to protect his den and his pack-your house and your family, nowadays. If your dog is overly protective and too aggressive, he may even bite visitors (especially strangers) and attack other dogs or animals nearby. Once again, this is a  problem you will have to control if you see signs of territorial aggression  with your dog. He must learn to know to not escalate the barking into violence.

Redirected Aggression: You may have seen this type of aggression before, and confused it with another type of aggression. For example, if someone is walking down the alley on the other side of your fence, and is somehow agitating your dogs-as some people will-the dogs may become so over-excited that they turn on each other for a moment. Sort of like a shark frenzy. They aren't really enemies of each other, but just lost control of their aggression and took it out on whoever was nearest.

Predatory Aggression:  Once again, this is a natural instinct that all dogs have to some degree-they are born with it. Many dogs do not display this aggression, but it is not uncommon to see on a daily basis. A dog will display this type of aggression by chasing a cat up a tree, or by chasing birds, dogs or  other animals. Often they are only chasing for the thrill of the chase and not to fight. However sometimes they are serious, so this too is a problem that needs to be corrected.

Medical Reasons Causing Aggression:  A very common example of this is when a female dog that is nursing or pregnant gets extra protective and bitchy. Other times your dog may be feeling bad from an injury or illness, and this could cause him to act aggressively. Some dogs are just not wired right, and have no one central reason for their aggression. It seems that just like some people, that's just the way  they are.

Now that you understand how to recognize and diagnose the reasons for your dog's aggression problems, you can figure out the best methods for correcting his behavior problems, and making him a better behaved pet who is now unlikely to cause any problems through his aggression.

Stop Dog Barking By Teaching Your Dog What Is Appropriate

Stop Dog Barking By Teaching Your Dog What Is Appropriate

How do you stop dog barking? Barking can be the most bothersome sound in the neighborhood. It is their natural instinct to give you warnings and discouraging barking may be against your best interests. Sometimes they bark for attention or because of hunger. If the noise is constant, you can stop dog barking in several ways.

First, attempt to determine what they are trying to tell you. If you think your dog wants attention, give him the attention he needs after he gets quiet. If you acknowledge the behavior, the barking will continue. This lets him know you won't give him attention until he is quiet. If boredom seems to be the problem, toys and exercise will help. Make certain he has plenty of food and water at all times. When the dog barks when you come home in the evening, give him some attention and a toy. He can't bark and play at once. It is a good idea to keep a chew bone within reach. These can keep him occupied for a while.

Some dogs are very territorial. Not only do they bark at approaching people but anyone they see walking by the house. Attempt distracting the dog if he begins barking. Get his attention with a treat or playtime. Each time you break the cycle, they learn that quiet behavior is rewarded.

Dog obedience schools are another way to stop dog barking. Incessant barking could be the lack of proper training. It also helps to burn the energy off which means less noise. Not only will you be happier but your neighbors will too. The dog will know to bark when necessary. Some people are not aware that their dog barks all day since they are at work. All you have to do is ask some neighbors.

If none of the above methods stop dog barking, it could be time for a bark collar. These operate with sounds so the wanted behavior is linked to the sound.  More complex and costly versions apply shock treatment. Bark collars come with two kinds of detection. The sound collar applies the noise of the bark to activate and a vibration collar applies vibrations from the throat. No kind is perfect since they can be set off by other external noises. A few use both methods.

A dog may be man's best friend but you and the neighbors can do without the constant barking. It is a dog's means of communication. Occasionally, the barking may mean something. The trick is to teach them when it is appropriate.  You don't want to be known as the neighborhood nuisance. Stopping the behavior just requires a little patience.

Most dog owners don't think of a prevention plan. You don't expect this type of behavior. Maybe it's your first dog or you never had a dog with a chewing problem. What ever the case may be, it is best to prepare for the new addition to the family.

Tip# 1: Remove all shoes, slippers, clothing, belts, etc out of the reach of your dog. If he can't reach, it he cannot chew on it.

Tip#2: Lock the closet doors, pantry, and bedroom doors. If you leave your pooch home alone for a long period of time, lets say for work, it's crucial to close all these doors. An open bedroom door with shoes, clothing in reach will only entice him to chew.

Sure-Fire Ways to Stop Dogs Whining

Sure-Fire Ways to Stop Dogs Whining

Dogs whine for any number of reasons. In order to effectively solve the problem, you first need to know the core reason of the whining.

A couple of reasons dogs whine are that they are not feeling well, or that they are lacking attention. The whining is simply a form of telling you that's something's not right. Whining due to feeling lonely or in need of attention can be simply cured by spending some time playing with your dog. Dogs that aren't feeling well for other reasons should be taken to a vet promptly.

Dogs also whine at times when they are left at home alone. If your dog is whining when you're not there, it is probably due to separation anxiety. Separation anxiety is something that can be fixed relatively easily. All you need to do is to teach your dog that when you leave the house, you will always return. Start by leaving the house for one or two minutes at a time, slowly work this up to 10 minutes and then half an hour once your dog gets accustomed.

While teaching your dog using this method, make sure that leaving the house and returning is never made to be a big deal. For example, when you do return, wait a good 10 minutes before saying hello to your dog. This will show your dog that you coming and going is no big deal, nothing worth getting carried away about.

After spending some time practicing 5 and 10 minute "away" intervals, slowly increase this until you are gone for over an hour. Little by little your dog will stop paying attention to when you return home and will stop whining completely.

Another approach to stop your dog whining is to using negative reinforcement. This method is rather controversial however as it involves ignoring your dog which can be dangerous if he has a real problem. Firstly, tell your dog in a firm way to stop whining. If your dog doesn't stop, start making some loud unpleasant noise that your dog will associate with the whining. In time your dog will learn that whining is unpleasant and will stop.

Even if your dog's whining is driving you crazy, never resort to physical punishment. Abuse is not an effective form of training and it's also against the law. It can have many harmful effects on your dog, more than just the pain of the abuse. The best way to get lasting results when training your dog is to treat it with love and firm but fair respect.

Protecting Yourself Against Dog Bites

Protecting Yourself Against Dog Bites

Upwards of 4.7 million people are bitten by dogs every year in the U.S., according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Of these bites, 800 000 are of such severity as to require medical attention. Further, about 368, 000 of these victims end up in hospital emergency departments, at a rate of 1, 008 per day. It is little wonder that dog bites are the fifth most frequent cause of emergency room visits among children. What's surpising is the drastic increase in the number of fatal maulings per year: 33 in 2007 and an average of 17 in the eighties and nineties.

In a study of dog bites from 1982 to present conducted by Merritt Clifton, editor of Animal people, it was found that two-thirds of life-threatening or fatal attacks by dogs with otherwise no known history of outrageous violent behavior. The Cliffton study shows that Rottweilers, Pit bulls, Presa Canarios and their mixes are responsible for 74% of attacks that were included in the study. Specifically, these breeds unleashed 68% of the attacks upon children, 82% of the attacks upon adults, and caused 65% of the deaths, and 68% of the maimings.

Regardless of breed type, dog bites invariably result from dog owners' negligence. Most offten the only charge against dog bite victims is that of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Still, victims are not altogether helpless. There are steps you can follow to avoid dog attacks and to prevent escalating situations of attack. As well, there are measures that must be taken should you be bitten. Following are checklists, albeit inexhaustive, of what to do in each of the said cases.

How to Avoid a Dog Attack:

Do not pet a dog without first letting him see you. Do not lean your face close to a dog. Do not tease a dog, especially if it is chained. Do not startle a sleeping dog. Do not bother a dog that is eating. Do not disturb a dog that is caring for puppies. Do not turn your back on a dog and run away.

What to Do in Situation of Attack:

Never scream and run Remain motionless, hands at your sides, and avoid eye contact with the dog Once the dog loses interest in you, slowly back away until he is out of sight. If the dog does attack, "feed" him your jacket, purse, bicycle, or anything that you can put between yourself and the dog. If you fall or are knocked to the ground, curl into a ball with your hands over your ears and remain motionless. Try not to scream or roll around.

If you are bitten or attacked by a dog, do not to panic:

Immediately wash the wound thoroughly with soap and warm water. Contact your physician for additional care and advice. Report the bite to your local animal care and control agency. Tell the animal control official everything you know about the dog, including his owner's name and the address where he lives. If the dog is a stray, tell the animal control official what the dog looks like, where you saw him, whether you've seen him before, and in which direction he went.

This checklist--indeed, animal education in general--is a formidable weapon against dog bites. Protect your children from violent dog attacks; teach them how to interact with animals.

Understanding Dog Digging

Understanding Dog Digging Why Do Dogs Dig?

Asking why dogs dig is almost like asking why they bark. Digging is part of a dogs nature, and so are sniffing, barking, and chewing. Dogs dig for several reasons. For some dogs, digging can be a pasttime. Digging can also be expected from dogs that are confined or isolated. Digging can be a favorable alternative activity when they get bored. Some dogs, however, dig purposefully. They can dig to bury objects. They can dig for food, whether it is to bury a bone, or take something that they previously buried. Weather can also push a dog to dig warming and cooling pits.

Solving the Digging Problem

Your dogs digging may not always be a bother for you, especially if your dog only dig once in a while, as long as it digs where appropriate. To contain dog digging only to what is appropriate and safe, you can provide your dog a special place where he can dig. This way, you can choose the spot and make sure that it is a safe place for the dog to spend a lot of time in. To teach your dog to dig in that spot, involve your pet as you prepare its own digging pit. Try to loosen up the soil so it will be easier for your dog to dig in that particular area. You can also make use of the dogs toys and other accessories. By making like you are burying the objects there for him to find, your dog will get the idea and start digging where he should. Do this activity over and over again until your dog learns where it is supposed to dig. If you see your dog digging in a different place other than the designated digging pit, catch his attention with a loud noise, and direct it towards the correct digging pit. You can also reinforce the behavior by praising your dog when it finds the right digging pit.

Controlling Your Dogs Digging

Digging cannot be completely prevented. Once in a while, you may find your dog digging. What you need to prevent is your dogs digging turning into a regular habit. If the digging turns into an extreme problem, you need to control it already. There is no surefire way to take digging out of a dog, but you can simply keep your dog preoccupied with other activities to keep it from digging too much. Make sure that your dog interacts with people and other dogs as well. Take your dog out for regular walks. A properly socialized dog will display lesser tendencies of digging. Also, if you have a new puppy, make it a point to keep your new puppy away from a place where it can dig up dirt, such as the garden or yard. Although it is impossible to keep a dog away from these places completely, simply limit the time that they spend there. Also, since dogs usually stay in the garden or in the yard where they can roam around, you can also put toys and other treats out in the yard. So when your dog is outside and gets bored, it can turn to the toys, instead of to digging.

Positive Training With Dog Treats

Positive Training With Dog Treats

There was a time when negative dog training was often used. Rather than only rewarding the desired behavior, punishment was given for incorrect behavior. Canines are naturally inclined to work, and most have a strong desire to learn as a way to work for a reward. This is why positive obedience training with dog treats is a far better approach.

Human Training First

Believe it or not, much of dog training has nothing to do with the dog and everything to do with the human. How you react is vital to how quickly your pet will learn. If you are slow to reward dog treats after a major success, then your pet may not pick up on why he or she was being rewarded. On the other hand, if you reward too often, your pet may not feel the need to work as hard. Find an ideal balance between praise and dog treats. The food reward should be saved for significant advancements while praise and petting can be used for each small step achieved.

Be Patient Every Step of the Way

Remain completely patient and avoid reacting negatively out of frustration. If your pet doesnt seem to understand a step, never take it as a personal attack. Dogs are not vengeful, and as humans we are emotional. We often displace our own emotions by applying them to our pets. The reality is a dog that seems stubborn may not understand because you are moving too quickly. Take a break, gather more dog treats and start again.

If things have become frustrating, and your pet doesnt seem to get the command, it is time to take a few steps backwards. Return to more basic steps and see where your pet excels. Once he or she seems to be getting it, you can slowly progress again. Make a point to offer dog treats as you did the first time through, especially when steps that your pet didnt understand are successfully executed. Never push yourself and your pet forward when he or she is not making progress.

Avoid Fear and Aggression

Dog treats, praise and petting are the only tools you really need to tell your dog he or she is doing the right thing. Negative behavior should be replaced, not punished. Do not hit or yell at your dog if he or she does something wrong during training. This can cause your pet to fear you. He or she may not understand the behavior was incorrect. As far as they can tell, you randomly punished them. Continuing down this path can lead to aggression, should your pet feel the need to become defensive.

That is not to say if your pet does something wrong you should not react. Bad behavior should be immediately stopped by removing your pet from the source, accompanied by a firm, deep no. Many pet owners find that this method is extremely effective and far more desirable than hitting or other forms of punishment.

Hunting Dog Training Techniques

Hunting Dog Training Techniques

When you think of a hunting scene, what do you imagine? Perhaps you see a man in camouflage clothes, toting a rifle. Perhaps you see a proper British man in red jacket and knee high black boots on horseback. And probably, no matter how you picture the people, there's a hunting dog nearby.

Dogs have been great companions to hunters for hundreds of years. They provide friendship, of course, but can also help a hunter be more effective in the field by tracking, flushing, pointing, and retrieving game.

When you're training a dog to hunt with you, it's important to make sure your dog is trained properly and knows exactly what's expected of him in the field.

One tip that's repeated over and over by trainers is to start your dog in training early. It's much easier to train a puppy than a full grown dog. And by training early, you ensure more hunting time with a well trained dog.

The first piece of advice given to all dog trainers is to be patient. It takes dogs time to learn commands, and you shouldn't expect too much too soon. After all, it takes humans time to learn new things, so why should you expect more from your dog?

Along with patience, you should make sure you introduce your dog to commands slowly. If you try to do too much at once, your dog will get overwhelmed, and you won't get anywhere. This is frustrating to both you and your dog.

Consistency is another point that's stressed to trainers. Once you decide what commands to use, whether they be verbal, hand gestures, or even whistles, make sure you stick to what's set down. If you start training a dog to sit, for example, by saying "Sit," and then suddenly make a whistling sound to command the dog to sit instead, your dog won't know what you want, and you'll set your training back.

Praising your dog for obedience and good behavior is a very good way to get results quicker. Dogs respond well to positive reinforcement. If they know they'll get positive attention, they're more likely to repeat the behavior. Even if you think the good behavior is something "minor," give your dog a friendly pat on the head and a "Good boy!" to let him know he's doing a good job.

The proper training of your dog for the hunt is important. And while it may be a little overwhelming at first, patience, consistency, and praise can lead to a great hunting companion for any hunter.

Training a dog to hunt with you is a lot of fun. Make sure you have the proper Dog Supplies and the proper Dog Training Supplies. Visit premierdogsupplies.com for all you will need.

Tug of War Safely!

Tug of War Safely!

Tug of War has been around for hundreds of years, it went from an Olympic sport to being used as entertainment at business picnics.   It is used in just about every schools field day across the country and for most people it is taken for granted.  What you may not know is that tug of war can be very dangerous.  If someone wraps the rope around their hands to get a better grip on the rope their hands could be pulled off.  Sound crazy but there are reports of this happening.  Also if the rope ever breaks internal injury could result if the rope hits one of the participants.

There is a new style rope out there that helps keep tug of war safe.  That rope is the Powerpull ®tug of war rope. The Powerpull® ropes are made from high quality durable webbing that can withstand over 5,000 lbs. of force.  Each rope also has 2 loop handles every 28" along the rope.  These handles are sewn in and can also withstand over 5,000 lbs. of force.  Since these are made out of such strong material you do not have to worry about them breaking.  This takes out the risk of internal injury from the rope breaking.  They also have individual handles separated at a good distance for each participant.  This takes out the risk of someone wrapping the rope around their hands for a better grip which could result in some pretty bad hand and arm accidents.

Powerpull® tug of war ropes come in a few different sizes and configurations there is the 39' with 20 hand loops, 48' with 28 hand loops, and the 58' with 36 hand loops.  You can also get a 4-way tug of war rope with each leg having 5 sets of hand loops.  And if you need more of an Olympic strength tug of war rope you can get the Powerpull® Olympic Pro tug of war rope that test at 20,000 lb pull test on the line and 10,000 pull test on the loops.  That is some serious strength!  Powerpull® products are made in the United States which is always a nice thing.

If you need a new tug of war rope I would highly suggest the Powerpull® line of tug of war ropes.  You won't have to worry about the major injuries that could put a damper on your fun day.  For more information and pricing on the Powerpull® go to www.morleyathletic.com.
